GO! SEE! EXPLORE! : Amuse-The Adventure Museum
AMUSE- The Adventure Museum recently opened in East Memphis. It’s basically a giant building full of games for up to 6 people to participate in together (hot tip: wear athletic clothing; you will get sweaty).
The concept was brought to Memphis by the same team that opened Memphis Escape Room in 2015. Spending an hour (or 4) there would make an amazing date night, girls night out, or bring your kids and let them play too! It’s definitely great for later elementary age and up (younger than that and they may not be able to fully participate; people under 60 inches may need assistance, per their website).
When you first walk in and register, you are given a wristband. This wristband is how you are given access to the games (either you scan it to enter a room with a game or you scan it to compete in one of the one player or challenge games located out in the open in the hallways). This wristband also tracks which level of game you are on; most of the games have several levels that get harder as you go on.
After registering, there is a room full of free lockers to store all of your things. Believe me, you don’t want to be trying some of these challenges while carrying around a purse or diaper bag. Take advantage of that locker! Also, go ahead and store your coat and sweatshirt. You’re about to get sweaty!
The last thing you do before you start is watch a short video on how the games work, how you scan into the rooms, how you start the games, etc. Definitely give that a quick watch before you head into the main area!
Like I said above, most of the games are located in rooms throughout the building; there’s definitely a maze-like quality to the building with rooms that start in one hallway but come out in another and hallways that intersect in unexpected ways. Throughout the hallways are also stand-alone kiosks where you can do single player challenges and a few head-to-head challenges where two people compete at one game.
The vast majority of the games are in the rooms. Up to 6 people can be in a room competing at any given time; if your group is bigger than 6, you will either need to divide up and do more than one game at a time or take turns.
In all of the games in the rooms, you work together to complete a task. There are three main categories of games: physical challenges, mental challenges, and skill-based challenges. We spent almost two hours here, switching between the types of games, and still didn’t get to all of the challenges.
If you are bringing kids, I would definitely recommend the two hour option. Personally, I think an hour would’ve been perfect before heading out to dinner for a date night.
At the end of the day, this is a hard place to explain. I went with a couple of friends and had no expectations. (I am glad that my friend mentioned she was wearing leggings and tennis shoes!) It ended up being so much fun. I felt like a kid again, and we were all super into all the games. Most of the time, you have no idea what you’re supposed to be doing and half the fun is figuring it out as you go. I would definitely check this out if you’re looking for a fun night out!
