Memphis Runners Track Club :: Our March Nonprofit of the Month

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Memphis surpassed Salt Lake City to rank as the most generous metropolitan area in the United States, giving almost $6 of every $100 earned to philanthropy. With this in mind, the Memphis Moms Blog wants to feature a local Nonprofit every month. There are so many amazing organizations in our city dedicated to looking out for the well being of all Memphians, and we want to feature them. If you know of a Nonprofit we should feature, Let us know by nominating them here

The Memphis Runners Track Club (MRTC) is a non-profit organization, incorporated in 1979, that is dedicated to promoting health and fitness through training programs as well as amateur road racing, cross country, and track, in the spirit of fun and competition. Serving around 4,000 members, MRTC is considered one of the largest and most active running clubs in the nation.

Our goal is to reach out and provide positive and healthy experiences for runners and walkers of all levels and abilities.

About Our Programs

MRTC running programs include: Road Race Series, Women Run/Walk Memphis, MRTC-KIDS!, which is held in both the spring and fall, Tennessee State Parks Hill & Dale 8-Miler, and Winter Off-Road Race Series.

We are particularly proud of our Women Run/Walk Memphis Program, which trains Walkers, Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced Runners, ending with the “Graduation 5K” for participants. Women Run/Walk Memphis, has been recognized nationally with an award for being an Outstanding Beginner Running Program. To learn more, visit our website Women Walk/Run Memphis.

MRTC-KIDS

In 2006, to address the challenges Memphis faces with childhood obesity and poor eating habits, we introduced our MRTC-KIDS! program. Averaging over 170 kids, ages 3-13, MRTC-KIDS! focuses on teaching proper Nutrition, regular Activity, Perseverance, and Self-esteem, also known as NAPS. The program includes a 4-week workshop that culminates with Kids Only kids’ race/graduation at week 5. Our program’s curriculum follows the national Kids Run the Nation guidelines and has recently been funded ($1,000) in a national grant competition. To learn more or are considering enrolling your little one THIS Spring, check us out MRTC-KIDS!

How We Get Our Funding

To help fund our many programs, MRTC generates money by providing services to many of the races throughout the mid-south. These include accurate course measurements, exact timing, race results, and setting up complex finish lines. MRTC is also a proud sponsor and takes part in the St. Jude Memphis Marathon Weekend. In addition to assisting outside races with their race day needs, we host many races of our own.

Giving Back To The City

To support equity in the Mid-South, MRTC regularly donates to many charitable organizations.  We are proud to support and contribute to Youth Villages, University of Memphis Scholarship Fund, The Greenline, Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park, Shelby Farms, Overton Park, Mid-South Trails Association, the Harahan Bridge Project, Memphis Youth Athletics, and Girls on the Run. We have had tremendous success with the great support of our many volunteers who assist in organizing as well as setting up races, running group placements, and being MRTC coaches in our various training programs. This has helped show how the club’s presence has shaped Memphis running as we have come to know it.

40 Years Of Running

Celebrating forty years of running, we are proud to have been the recipient of several distinguishing awards in recent years. In 2017, we were awarded the Runner Friendly Community by the Road Race Club of America (RRCA). This award was given to communities that promote running as healthy exercise for residents while ensuring runners’ safety.

MRTC thanks Memphis for supporting us these past forty years. We continue to welcome runners of all levels, as well as new volunteers. If you are interested in becoming a member, participating/volunteering in one of our programs, or simply want to learn more about MRTC, visit our website, Memphis Runners Track Club  and follow/like us on Facebook.
