GO! SEE! EXPLORE! :: Bog and Barley

Go, see, and explore: Ireland. Can't get to the actual country? How about an Irish pub, then!? What if I said you can enjoy an authentic Irish pub, right here in Memphis!? If you haven't had the opportunity to go and check out Bog and Barley, I suggest you add it to your explorer's list, even if you're not Irish.

Irish pubs date back to the 10th century. It's the hub of a community, where meet to discuss the day's events and share a meal, some laughs, and a pint of Guinness.

Bog and Barley is conveniently located on Poplar in the Regalia Shopping Center. When you park and approach the front, it's unassuming, but once you enter, be prepared to be transported right to Ireland!

As soon as you walk in the door, you forget you're in the heart of the city. I can only speak for myself (and I've never had the opportunity to visit an Irish pub in Ireland), but I can sense the authenticity and meticulous attention to detail that was given when they designed this place. Also, something that a lot of Memphians take pride in, is that this place is locally owned and operated.

The interior is warm and inviting. The rich, dark hue of the wood is characteristic of an authentic Irish pub. But expect a pub kicked up a few notches. I've been a few times, and the service has never disappointed me. I'm far from Irish, but I've always felt welcomed and respected.

There's a generous bar in the center of the restaurant; on the weekends, it can become standing-room only. If you want a table, make a reservation, especially on the weekends in the evening.

Your server will explain the history of the building and all the intricate details made to keep true to the pub experience. The restaurant was actually designed and built in Ireland. There's a cocktail on the menu called "The 447" in honor of the 447 pieces that were shipped from Ireland to Memphis and then reassembled, becoming Bog and Barley.

Once seated, you have the opportunity to try well-known Irish dishes.

There's a section of traditional Irish fare on the menu. You have fish and chips, bangers and mash, and shepherd's pie. Again, I've been here a few times, and each time I go, I take someone new with me, and we've had the fish and chips, and a couple of people in the group had the bangers and mash, and all were excellent.

I recommend you step out of your comfort zone and try something new.

Between the inviting ambiance, the center bar with the television, plenty of drink selections, and the fantastic service, I hope you enjoy this place just as much as I do. It's absolutely stunning - and right here in Memphis.

If you've been, I would love for you to share your experience. Make sure to comment.

Some items to note:

The dress code is dressy casual. I've also seen smart casual, but I suggest dressy casual since it is an upscale dining establishment.

They can accommodate groups of up to 50 seated and 65 for a mingling party.
