GO! SEE! EXPLORE! :: Fayette County
If you’re looking for a quick day trip option with the kids, look no further than Fayette County! Here are some awesome and unique places to check out, personally curated by your local Fayette County correspondents, Gina and Colleen.
Located only half an hour or so from downtown Memphis, Fayette County is just to the east of Shelby County and has a ton of really fun things to do. The county seat is Somerville but there are lots of fun, small cities and towns to explore. Read on about some of our favorite attractions!
Backermann’s Country Market
Ok, so technically Bakermann’s is just over the border in Hardeman County, but it it definitely worth the drive! The Country Store is run by the local Mennonite community and features a wide array of their canned goods, jams and jellies, homemade breads, home decor, and much more. There’s also a cafe serving breakfast and lunch (it’s delicious!), with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating perfect for families. But the best part about Backermann’s is the on-site farm, complete with an up-close view of the GOAT PLAYGROUND. There’s also a playground for the human kiddos!
Fayette County Airport
If your family loves airplanes and would enjoy an up-close-and-personal view of a runway, look no further! The Fayette County Airport is a beautiful facility with a special indoor area for viewing the runway. Take note: The airport is NOT open on the weekends, so this is a weekday adventure.
Herb Parsons Lake
Herb Parsons Lake is a 117 acre lake with a picnic area, hiking and biking trails, small boat access, and fishing. There’s a small store open seasonally that sells fishing licenses, bait, and some concessions. The park is open daily from 30 minutes before sunrise until 30 minutes after sunset.
Walkapony Goat Ranch
Located in Rossville, Walkapony Goat Ranch offers a variety of goat related fun! They have Goat Yoga, baby goat cuddle time, traveling birthday parties, and can be booked for community events. If you are closer to Fayette County, you can also donate your fall pumpkins and dried up Christmas trees for the goats to snack on! Check their website for availability and sign up in advance for events, because spots go quickly!
Tom’s Farm
Tom’s Farm is also located in Rossville and is only open seasonally for fall fun! Starting the last week of September they have a corn maze, hayrides to the pumpkin patch for pumpkin picking, and a farm store in the barn. There are picnic areas where you can have a bonfire, and lots of people bring food and drink from home to enjoy afterwards.
