MMB’s Spring 2019 Mid-South Children’s Consignment Sale Directory

The “Sport” of Consigning

If last spring had been an Olympic event, it would’ve been a 200 meter sprint. Shoot out of the gate and run like crazy to tag, drop off, pickup, and repeat in a matter of approximately 14 days.  There were a few preliminaries to participate in, but the bulk of the “games” landed within a 2 week period.

Fast forward to the Spring 2019 season, and it’s the epitome of an Olympic marathon. Slow steady strides, breathe in and out, focus on the destination.  This Spring sale season is going to be a long one folks.

Like 13+ weeks long!

If you are new, this should be a great season for you to jump into the consignment game. Lots of time in between to gather your stuff, small batches at a time, and be ready for drop off day. If you are a seasoned veteran of the consignment game, you have already gotten out your “consignment calendar” and started to plot out your pre-sale training regime.

If you missed my previous Spring and Fall posts about getting in on the fun and navigating the consignment sale commotion, you can check them out here on the Memphis Moms Blog site:  Spring 2017Fall 2017and Spring 2018.

In my first few posts on children’s’ consigning, I focused on how to get started, supplies needed, tagging tips, and seasonal considerations of selling your treasures.  Last January, I shared about how you can make the most of your time, energy and available resources while consigning. Last Fall 2018,  I shared about how it has become a sort of family business. To me, it’s a real source of additional income for our family.

A couple of rather noteworthy changes this year:

  1. Check each sale page for changes, even if you are comfortable with the rules! Several sales are really really cracking down on specifications for tagging.  Some only allow tagging guns and some are choosing to reject items that aren’t attached properly with safety pins.
  2. Shoe preparation is hard, and the one thing I hate most. Until I found zip-ties.  Zip-ties are a lifesaver for shoe sorters and consigners.
  3. Our dear friends at Emmanuel United Methodist have decided to close their sale this year.  They were one of the very first sales I signed up for after having my 3rd child and only girl.  They were supportive, encouraging, welcoming, and offered so much beginner’s advice that, at the end, I felt like a seasoned veteran.  YOU WILL BE MISSED!

Consignment is a great way to purge a large quantity of items at one time without haggling with people over price, opening your home to strangers, or driving to a “meet” location.  The process is fairly easy once you get the hang of online item entry, the various tagging processes, and item limits from sale to sale.  My advice is to choose one and try it out.  Pick a smaller church sale and enter 30 or so items to sell. Rule of thumb, 60-70 of your nicer quality items will do better than 100 average quality ones. I promise you will be pleased with the results.  And don’t forget you can deduct your sales on taxes (what they take, if they are from a non-profit organization.)

Here is what you need to know about Spring /Summer consigning:

  • Holiday outfits. Easter outfits, vacation outfits (a ’la Disney/ destination trips).  Think seersucker, bubbles, appliquéd, and smocked.
  • Bathing suits/ cover-ups/ sandals
  • Sports equipment and gear. Licensed team gear and outdoor sports equipment are big sellers.
  • Outdoor equipment. Bikes, water tables, playhouses, scooters.
  • Homeschooling supplies and educational videos/cd’s. Consignment sales are a great place to pick-up supplementary workbooks and learning materials.

Here is what you need to get started:

  • Merchandise tagging gun. I promise, you will thank me.
  • Hangers ($ store plastic kid sized hangers are perfect)
  • Large safety pins (NOT the $ store kind)
  • Rubber bands / zip-ties
  • Masking tape and clear packing tape
  • Sharpie pens
  • Ziplock bags – in assorted sizes
  • Zip-ties – for pairing shoes securely
  • Heavy cardstock or hanging tags like these:  Merchandise Tags
  • A planning calendar.  Great for getting strategic and recording all the dates to volunteer, drop off and pickup.
