How I Met Your Father :: The Little Things
Kids,
The year was 1993 and I was working as teller at an in-store branch for First Tennessee Bank. Because your mom is a friendly person and loves to smile it was not usual for regular customers to let others skip so that I could assist them with their transaction. Your dad was one of those customers. He would come in weekly to cash his check. Every week there was small talk but since I wasn’t “looking” I missed all the signs.
One particular Friday your dad was so busy “flirting” that after I cashed his check he walked away and left his money on the counter. He disappeared into the grocery store and when he came to the register to check out I called him back over to the bank to give him his money.
Did I mention that there was a floral section between the bank & the checkout lines? About 5 minutes later I see a bouquet of flowers appear out of nowhere in front of me. At this point everyone waiting in line said “awwww” at the same time. I could not have scripted it better.
I finally caught the hint and agreed to go out with him. After our first date I would get off work to find balloons, flowers or a special note on my car. For me it was always the little things and he would always do the little things in a special way. While we were dating he would buy me gifts that he said WE could use when WE got married. He was right. After we got married all of the gifts that he bought were put to full use in OUR new home.
Meeting, dating and marrying your dad was a great experience. I hope that when you guys start dating that you remember that it’s probably going to be the little things that will win her over. Romance that special someone like your dad romanced your mom and hopefully one day I’ll have some amazingly beautiful daughters-in-law and grandchildren.
