12 Reasons you Should TOTALLY get a Puppy for Christmas

Everybody loves a puppy. They’re so cute and fluffy and sweet! Maybe you’ve even been contemplating getting your kids a puppy for Christmas. Imagine how excited they’d be!

Since there’s been such a huge increase in gifted puppies over the last few years, I reached out to some of my colleagues and we have come up with….

12. You don’t have to buy batteries for it to “work.”

11. Your kids don’t touch you enough. They’re not needy enough either.

10. You won’t have to take down the Christmas tree. The puppy will destroy it long before New Year’s Eve.

9. You have plenty of extra money after buying all those presents (including the puppy) to pay for emergency vet visits when the puppy eats something they shouldn’t. Not to mention the routine visits.

8. You love spending hours googling “why is my dog…” and “is it safe for a dog to eat..”

7. You love to clean and your kids don’t make your house dirty enough.

6. You need a shredder, but want it to look cute.

5. Your kids are going to take total responsibility for the puppy. You won’t have to do a thing.

4. Your kids don’t run around the house shrieking enough. A mouthy puppy is just what they need!

3. You wanted to get rid of all the stuffed toys in the house anyway.

1. You miss being on an “infant” schedule, waking up multiple times in the middle of the night. The puppy schedule is even better because you get to freeze your butt off outside in your PJs!

In all seriousness though, remember that as cute as they are, puppies are a HUGE commitment. Both financially and time wise. We’ve all seen the posts on social media reminding us that animals are a 10+ year commitment, not a toy that can be discarded. Those of us who have worked in animal shelters can attest to the fact that there is a huge influx of young dogs every February and March.

If you decide to get a puppy for Christmas, make sure you have done your research. Choose a dog with traits that make sense for your family, have training lined up, and set rules for everyone ahead of time. That way you’ll be able to enjoy your new family member for many years to come!
