To My Firstborn as you enter Kindergarten
Dear Big Girl on your first day of Kindergarten,
First of all, I can’t believe it’s time for Kindergarten! And that you’re already FIVE. The past few years have gone by so fast for Mommy. I remember your first day of PDO and then one preschool and another. They were all exciting, but this is the big one for Mommy.
Kindergarten is so exciting for a lot of reasons. It’s the start of “big kid school,” so you will have a longer day. You will eat lunch in a cafeteria and have recess on a much bigger playground. A lot of the kids you meet this year will go to school with you for the next 5 or 6 years.
You’re going to learn so many things! Yes, some things may be more challenging than others, but Daddy and I will always be here to help. Pretty soon you will be able to read and write lots of words, solve math problems, and tell me all sorts of facts about history and science. I wonder what your favorite subject will be?
You’re going to make so many new friends in Kindergarten! I wonder who they will be, what adventures you’ll have together. Maybe one of them lives down the street from us and we don’t even know.
I want you to know that I am already so proud of you, and this year you are going to make me even more proud. And you will be so proud of yourself! You are enthusiastic, caring, and helpful. You are confident and outspoken, a fashionista and an artist. Kindergarten is going to make you even more independent, if that’s possible!
So when Mommy cries a lot on your first day, don’t worry. It’s just because you’re growing up, and I don’t think I will ever be ready for that. Go rock that new outfit, show them how amazing you are, and have so much fun! I can’t wait to hear all about it when I pick you up!
Love, Mommy
