October Mom of the Month {2020}

Memphis is full of amazing moms: working moms, stay-at-home moms, single moms, moms of multiples, etc. We want to highlight some of those moms! Each month we will feature one special mom as MMB’s mom of the month.

We asked Amy:

Tell us what it is like being a mom and business owner?

This answer would have looked very different a year ago. In times of a pandemic, my business and family life have very little separation. My kids are doing virtual school in my home along with 4 other kids that make up our little “pod school,” while I am splitting my time between admin work from home and seeing patients in the clinic.

Working from home due to COVID has really intertwined business and family life since my “office” is in the dining room. I now find that my work hours consist of spurts of time when the little one is napping or the sweet spot from 9-11:00 pm when the house is finally quiet, and I’m not semi-listening for my kids. My business calls are now my neighborhood walk times where I grab my shoes and headphones and run out of the house when the phone rings so I can have silence and leave the chaos for a bit. This is my new normal and I don’t apologize to my business partner or my team anymore when a kiddo pops in while I’m on a Zoom call. We are doing the best we can and growing in the midst of it all.

What do you love most about Memphis?

One of the things I love most about Memphis is the sense of community and camaraderie I’ve found in the small business world. There are so many women business owners here who have inspired me throughout the process of building and growing my business. I feel like Memphis is such a great place to start something, to make change, to take a leap, and having the support and resources of other folks doing the same is one of the ways that makes the work you’re doing sustainable and fulfilling. I love feeling connected to the energy and vibe that makes this city what it is through the people who call it home.

What is the best and hardest part of being a mom?

Right now, it’s my time, on both ends of the spectrum. I love my time with my littles in all of the chaos that a house full of spunky little ladies entails. I also feel the strains on my time from all of the different responsibilities and roles that need me and my time and energy. I want my kids to see a strong, healthy Mama and to see that as women, we can do the things we are passionate about and that we are capable and strong. I don’t love that they also see the tired, stressed, and distracted Mama that I am some days. My hope is that they are learning from both versions of me and that they feel loved and safe and supported, that they don’t spend their life seeking perfection, but that they know they are enough and that they can do hard things.
