One by One Ministries :: Our May Nonprofit of the Month {2025}
Do you remember discovering you were pregnant? The excitement? The surprise? The moment you may have thought, “Can I really do this?”
At One by One Ministries, we want moms to know they don’t have to feel worried or alone – we’re right here to help! It’s our goal to demonstrate the love of Christ by mentoring and educating pregnant and new moms to parent well.
Moms come to us for many reasons. Many are experiencing unplanned pregnancies and looking for love and support alongside educational materials. Some moms live away from their families and support systems and want friendship and direction in their new city. Some moms are younger – or older – and want the instruction and reassurance a mentor provides.
Whatever the reason, we are here to walk with each mom throughout her pregnancy and her child’s early years.
We train volunteers to serve as mentors and to provide friendship, encouragement, parenting education, baby development information, access to additional resources, and the love and hope of Jesus.
Each mom and mentor text/talk weekly and meet monthly. Mentors teach parenting strategies and baby health, safety, and development information. Mentors provide activities moms can use to support their babies’ language, social, emotional, and motor skill development. Mentors share milestones moms should watch for and help moms complete a baby book full of pictures, milestones, and family information.
We serve moms of all ages (minors need parental consent) regardless of socio-economic background, marital status, number of children, or religious affiliation. We have Spanish-speaking mentors available, and we serve moms in-person or virtually.
Mentors also connect moms to additional services they may need. We work with many local agencies including Agape, Neighborhood Christian Center, Wraparound District 6, and others to provide resources for food, housing, job and education assistance, transportation, etc. We are thrilled that many of our moms have completed high school, community college, and 4-year universities. Many have found better housing opportunities and better jobs. Many have also found church homes where they receive additional friendship and support.
Two of our favorite days each year are our Mother’s Day and Christmas blessing days. Many of our moms don’t receive gifts or recognition on these important days, and we want to make sure they know we love and value them. We provide moms with gifts and flowers at Mother’s Day and a Walmart gift card and gift at Christmas. Moms can also select new and gently used baby items from donations to our mentor closet. We have been happy to partner with Toys for Tots at Christmas so moms can pick up toys as well.
We love watching and supporting the wonderful relationships our moms and mentors develop. It’s not unusual for our moms and mentors to become such good friends that they continue to meet long after their time in our program ends!
One of our moms said, “I love One by One because I have a sense I belong. You get a lot of knowledge and resources. My mentor has been with me physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually and has been a big help. I can turn to her for anything. I feel like I have a friend. She will always be in my life, and I love her.”
