GO! SEE! EXPLORE! :: Memphis Rox
Memphis Rox Climbing and Community Center is located in the historic Soulsville neighborhood, directly across from STAX Museum of American Soul Music and the STAX Music Academy. Just like those two gems, Memphis Rox certainly does its part to make an impact on the neighborhood.
Memphis Rox is a traditional climbing gym but so much more. Yes, the space is surrounded by steep walls and brightly colored rocks (or holds) with ropes dangling from the tall ceilings, but there truly is something for everyone. They do take the climbing very seriously, however, as every person who enters the building must sign a safety waiver.
Climbing shoes, belay devices, and harnesses are available to rent/borrow, and in order to participate in some of the more challenging–or top rope–climbs, the belay (the person on the ground holding a rope attached to the climber’s harness) must possess a Top Rope Belay Card, which can be earned through a free class offered at the gym.
However, there is also plenty to do for less-experienced climbers, such as a large bouldering area with a variety of color-coded routes on walls that range from 10-13 feet high. No rope or harness is necessary–just the aforementioned shoes and perhaps some chalk to allow for a better, drier grip. This is where your children will likely put their Spiderman skills to work.
In addition to top rope classes, there are a variety of classes and clinics for various skill levels. There is also a gym with weights and exercise machines upstairs and a studio space for yoga and other exercise classes. Needless to say, there are plenty of fitness opportunities! They also offer birthday party packages and a birthday party room for after-climbing fun. Celebrations at Memphis Rox really, well, rock!
Memphis Rox is an amazing place for the whole family to burn off some energy or even to enjoy some of that coveted one-on-one kid time, but what makes this gym stand apart is its commitment to the community. According to their website, they are the “…largest nonprofit climbing gym in the world” and “…provide recreational, creative and nutritional programs to mentor, train and harness the potential of under-resourced youth in our community.” (In fact, they were featured as the Nonprofit of the Month by this organization in August 2018!)
Not only do they not turn anyone way due to an inability to pay, but they also serve their neighborhood in many other ways.
Their outreach efforts include an after-school program, neighborhood clean-ups, a clothing closet, a lunch program, and more! Juice Almighty, a juice bar and café located inside the gym, also has a pay-it-forward philosophy, and the gym has partnered with Sister Supply to provide free menstrual products to those in need.
Volunteers are always needed, and donations are always accepted.
Day passes and gear rental (shoes and belay devices) are available for the occasional climber, but memberships are a great option for those who like to climb more regularly.
