Tune Up Your Brain and Body

As a mom, I have always put my family first. But for years, I have been quietly suffering from anxiety and depression that have left me feeling overwhelmed and exhausted. I tried medications and traditional therapy, but nothing gave me lasting relief. Then I learned about Dr. Helen Ly and the treatment she offers. For the first time, I felt that someone had real solutions that could help me feel like me again.
Dr. Helen Ly is a board-certified neurologist and founder of Brain Body Balance TMS located in East Memphis. She has been offering cutting-edge magnetic stimulation therapy that effectively alleviates depression, anxiety, OCD, chronic pain, neuropathic pain, post-concussion recovery, PTSD, and brain fog.
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, or TMS, is a noninvasive, magnetic brain stimulation therapy that neuromodulates the brain and nervous system. TMS helps the brain and nerves to recover and restore their function. Dr. Ly uses a newer form of TMS technology called theta burst stimulation. Theta burst stimulation is a more efficient version of TMS that can deliver faster and better results.
Since she opened her TMS practice in 2021, Dr. Ly has treated hundreds of patients and boasts an over 90% success rate in the treatment of depression and anxiety.
By helping the brain heal and optimize function, magnetic pulses administered to the brain and nervous system aids in mood, memory, sleep, focus and chronic pain relief. TMS is FDA-cleared for treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD) and OCD and most insurances provide coverage for MDD.

An average of 6-12 sessions within 2-3 weeks is a typical schedule for optimal treatment results. TMS rebuilds synaptic connections between brain cells to help them communicate and perform. It’s like going to the gym on a regular basis to build strength and fitness. The more frequent and consistent you go, the quicker and better the results. TMS for treating major depression and OCD may be covered by insurance. The treatment course covered by insurance requires more treatment sessions over 6-8 weeks.
TMS is safe and there are no sedatives or drugs involved. However, due to the magnetic stimulation, those with implantable defibrillators, brain stents or metal in the head, and unstable seizure disorder cannot undergo TMS.
During the treatment, you feel a tapping sensation over the frontal and sides of the head during a typical TMS treatment session which lasts anywhere from 10-20 minutes; patients have full control over the intensity of the treatment so it’s very tolerable. Sometimes patients will fall asleep because they feel so relaxed while reclining in a comfortable chair.

In addition to TMS, magnetic stimulation applied to peripheral nerves is a great non-drug, non- invasive option for managing chronic pain such as chronic low back pain, chronic neck pain and neuropathic pain. The magnetic stimulation is placed over the pain site and takes 5-10 minutes per treatment session. Patients usually notice an immediate reduction in their pain level. An average of 2-3 sessions for the first 1-2 weeks followed by monthly maintenance is typical but the treatment schedule will be customized for the individual.
Dr. Ly also offers general neurology services in her integrative practice. They offer a modern, state-of-the art evaluation of memory loss and brain fog with a neurocognitive assessment study called Brainview. Brainview assesses real-time brain functioning with baseline brainwaves (EEG), along with analyzing the brain’s response to audiovisual stimulation. “It offers an efficient and objective baseline of your brain function,” explains Dr. Ly.
Dr. Ly is also accepting new patients and specializes in management of migraine headaches, musculoskeletal and myofascial pain. She offers trigger point injections and Botox injections for management of migraine headaches, tension headaches, neck and shoulder tension, and TMJ pain.
Dr. Ly’s office is located at 529 North Highland, 38122. For inquiries about services, please call (901) 249-2154 or visit her website.
