December Mom of the Month {2019}

Memphis is full of amazing moms: working moms, stay-at-home moms, single moms, moms of multiples, etc. We want to highlight some of those moms! Each month we will feature one special mom as MMB’s mom of the month.

Lucy is a Memphis native, small business owner, and our December Mom of the Month! Lucy went to Lausanne High School before attending cosmetology school. She always knew she wanted to be a hairdresser; she loves helping people feel good about themselves. While she’s been a hairdresser for 13 years, she bought her salon, Studio 901 in 2016. When she did that, she realized that she needed a business/accounting degree. So she went back to school at the University of Memphis and graduated from there in her late 20’s. She says that it’s never too late to get an education!

She and her husband, Patrick, married in 2015. They had their daughter, Gwen, two years later. Learning to balance work and being a mom was an adjustment. But she stepped back some days at the salon to focus on being a mom, and has loved being active in both roles!

We asked Lucy:

1. Tell us what it is like being a mom and a small business owner?

I like having flexibility and adult interaction through my job. As moms we put so much pressure on ourselves to be perfect, so it’s nice to go to work. where I am surrounded by clients and friends that always support me. Balancing work life is always hard, but I’m very blessed that I have a wonderful village to help out with Gwen when I need to work. I always miss her when I’m away, but I know that time apart makes us better when we come together.

2. What the best and hardest part of being a mom?

The best part is how she looks at me with such love, even when I feel inadequate. Plus her little laugh ain’t bad! The hardest is trying to have patience and remember that she’s still learning EVERYTHING.
