LaterSkaters Memphis :: Our February Nonprofit of the Month {2026}
LaterSkaters Memphis exists because we’ve seen firsthand how skateboarding can change lives. For us, skateboarding is more than just rolling on a board—it’s about confidence, connection, creativity, and having a safe place to belong. Our goal is to create a fun, welcoming, and positive culture while growing a stronger skateboarding community across Memphis. We welcome skaters of all ages and backgrounds, but our main focus is on youth ages 6–15, making sure they have access to opportunities they might not otherwise get.
Everything we do is rooted in three main areas. The first is supporting and growing the local skateboarding community. We work hard to raise funds for inclusive skate events that are designed for different age groups, skill levels, and styles of skateboarding. These events are held all over the city, not just in one neighborhood, because we believe skateboarding should be accessible to everyone. We also raise money to purchase skateboards, helmets, and safety gear to give away—especially to kids who wouldn’t be able to skate without that support. By removing financial barriers, we give young people a chance to try skateboarding in a safe, encouraging environment where fun and safety go hand in hand.
The second part of our mission is advocacy. LaterSkaters Memphis actively works with city, county, and state leaders to share the real benefits of skateboarding. While it’s a great physical activity, skateboarding also supports mental health, builds confidence, and teaches problem-solving and resilience. Skaters learn balance, patience, and perseverance, along with applied physics, math, geometry, and other STEM-related concepts—all without even realizing they’re learning. We believe skateboarding should be recognized as a positive outlet and an educational tool, not just a recreational activity. By helping change how skateboarding is viewed, we aim to build long-term support within schools and public spaces.
The third area of focus is expanding access through infrastructure. LaterSkaters Memphis is committed to increasing the number of public skateparks and skate spots in the Greater Memphis area, with a goal of adding two skateparks and one skate spot. We are especially excited about the new skatepark planned for Lowrance Park in the Hickory Hill area, projected to break ground in April 2026. Designed and built by Spohn Ranch, this park will be beginner-friendly while still offering challenges for more experienced skaters. It will give local youth a place where they feel comfortable learning, progressing, and being part of a community. We also plan to stay involved in identifying future locations, gathering public input, and ensuring thoughtful design and quality construction.
LaterSkaters Memphis is supported through grants, sponsors, and private donors, but our true foundation is the people we serve. At the end of the day, skateboarding is about having fun, staying safe, and supporting one another. By creating positive experiences and accessible spaces, we’re helping build a skate culture in Memphis where everyone has a place—and a reason—to roll forward together.
