Fall 2018 Consignment Directory – The “Business” of Consigning

Fall 2018 Mid-South Children’s Consignment Sale Directory

Sweet sweet summertime. Maybe you have just gotten into your summer-time grove of pool, snacks, sunscreen and playdates, on the repeat... or maybe, by now, you’re just over summer altogether. It won’t be long before those kiddos of yours are back in school or MDO and you can say “Tag! Your it!” to the teachers that will soon be "blessing" your kids all day long. When all those back-to-school signs go up in the aisles of Target, you know what time it is! It’s Fall Consignment season here in Memphis. If you missed my previous Spring and Fall posts about getting in on the fun and navigating the consignment sale commotion, you can check them out here on the Memphis Moms Blog site: Spring 2017, Fall 2017 and Spring 2018.

In my first few posts on children’s’ consigning, I focused on how to get started, supplies needed, tagging tips, and seasonal considerations of selling your treasures. Last January I shared about how you can make the most of your time, energy, and available resources while consigning. This edition, I share about how it has become a family business. To me, it’s a real job.

In the last 4 years of being an active consignment mommy in the Mid-South circuit, I now consider this a second (actually a third job). I treat consigning as a family business. I track expenses related to it and tally income after sales. I also deduct the percentages that non-profits keep as taxable donations (please consult your advisor for any special circumstances but it’s a real thing).

This past January, I decided to set a personal “business” goal of bringing in $800 in total sales for the Spring sale “season” if you will. From February until around mid-March, I carefully planned my participation options and strategically picked the sales that I wanted to register for. I picked the sales with the highest percentage return (80%-85%) and made sure I registered for them first. After looking at them on my sale planning calendar, it turned out 3 of my major (and favorite) sales were all on the same week. I called it my “Consignment Sale trifecta” weekend.

Challenge - accepted!

In a matter of about 8-10 days, I managed to sort, enter into inventory, tag, deliver and pick up my remaining inventory at 3 different consignment sales and GET PAID. By Spring Break, I had made $778.00. The end-of-school uniform swap put me over my goal by about $45. That’s $850.00 in your pocket for selling things you don’t wear or play with anymore.

Consignment is a great way to purge a large quantity of items at one time without haggling with people over price, opening your home to strangers or driving to a “meet” location. The process is fairly easy once you get the hang of online item entry, the various tagging processes and item limits from sale to sale. My advice is to choose 1 and try it out. Pick a smaller church sale and enter 30 or so items to sell. Rule of thumb, 60-70 of your nicer quality items will do better than 100 average quality ones. I promise you will be pleased with the results. And don’t forget you can deduct your sales on taxes (what they take, if they are from a non-profit organization.)
